Video Premiere: Olive Klug, “Fleeting”

Taking leave may be fraught with wistful melancholy, deep sadness, or even sorrowful regret. Perhaps more than any other times in our lives, these moments of leaving a place or a person remind us of the transience of life and just how deeply we cherish what we are leaving behind, since we will never return to this precise place and time. We and it will be changed the next time we arrive here. On what is appropriately the final song on their new album, Lost Dog, Olive Klug evokes the emotional complexities of leaving with a poignant, stripped-down candor, their vocals flowing over circling finger-picked guitar stylings. The laid back, backyard performance in the video captures the song’s quiet intensity, inviting us into an intimate circle of longing and leaving and celebration of the “fleeting” moments of our lives.

As Klug observes of the song: “‘Fleeting’ closes the album and my hope is that it allows listeners to feel the difficult-to-describe sensation of being more present when you’re about to leave a place. For me, this connected feeling that is easier to experience at the end of an era is addicting, and part of why I am motivated to travel often and stay on the move. The sing-along chorus repeats ‘it’s Fleeting, I’m better when I’m leaving,’ and is at its best when performed live, when the audience is able to experience a deep presence with me as they realize for a moment together that every aspect of this life is truly fleeting.”
