Video Premiere: Alison Brown & Steve Martin (featuring Vince Gill) – “Wall Guitar (Since You Said Goodbye)”
Dynamic duo Alison Brown and Steve Martin are back with a new song this month!
On November 11, the pair shared their new song, “Wall Guitar (Since You Said Goodbye)” on The Kelly Clarkson Show and on YouTube. The song features lyrics by Steve Martin and music by Alison Brown; the track features Vince Gill and other greats, too — including Stuart Duncan and Andrea Zonn.
All of us here at Folk Alley know that music is magical; it truly does get us through the hard times we experience. And that, according to Steve Martin, is kind of the point of the new song, one of more than 100 banjo songs he’s written over the years.
Martin says: “This is about someone going into a bar with a broken heart and saying give me that ‘wall guitar’ — a guitar that’s hanging on the wall with rotten strings, or one string missing…sometimes people take it down and play it.” A standout lyric from “Wall Guitar”? “I sing the sad songs real good now,” which, according to Martin, is “the good side of having heartbreak…you can write about it and understand it.”
Asked about the creation of the song, Brown says: “Steve texted me this great little melody on the banjo that he was playing and…I listened to it and thought it was beautiful so I wrote a B-section to it and sent it back and then we had the start of a tune. Steve kept saying, ‘I could really imagine hearing lyrics with this’ and I was like, ‘go!’ And that’s really the genesis of the song.”
