Song Premiere: Kittel & Co., “Fields of Brooklyn”
Artist: Kittel & Co. (Jeremy Kittel-fiddle/violin; Josh Pinkham-mandolin; Nathaniel Smith-cello; Quinn Bachand-guitar; Simon Chrisman-hammer-dulcimer)
Upcoming release: Whorls (Compass Records)
Song: “Fields of Brooklyn”
Quote: “Fields of Brooklyn” is dedicated to all the public parks of the world. To all the places where we as humans have had the good judgment to commit to caring for public green space, and in turn care for our collective health and happiness. This album wouldn’t exist, at least in its form here, if I hadn’t lived close to the big park in Brooklyn for the last several years. To whoever made Prospect Park their mission 150 years ago, and to everyone who makes such efforts today… thank you!
Musically speaking, the first tune is a kind of slow reel. Very simple, which allowed us to explore the arranging and improvising aspects together more. I love both Josh’s and Simon’s solos on there so much. The B part kind of climbs upwards, which let us do a really long, “high” climb during the dulcimer solo.
The second tune (this is the only medley on Whorls) is “The Cassel Light,” written for my dear friend, the great fiddler Hanneke Cassel. It’s a jig. – Jeremy Kittel
