Song Premiere: Jon Stickley Trio, “Scripting the Flip”

The title track of the Jon Stickley Trio’s album Scripting the Flip (due 4/3 via Organic Records) opens with Stickley’s propulsive guitar notes before launching into soaring flights in which bluegrass and folk meet jazz. The Trio (Stickley on guitar, Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle, Hunter Deacon on drums) crafts inventive rhythms, following the patterns where they lead and creating a spacious and cascading flow of sound. “Scripting the Flip” combines the sonic themes of Celtic music—it’s a musical theme that winds through the song—with the transporting fiddle sounds of It’s a Wonderful Day’s “White Bird.” Just as the song picks up tempo, it abruptly ends.

As Jon Stickley says of the song, “Sometimes when we are in bluegrass jams, the rhythms will accidentally get switched around and the song suddenly sounds very strange and backwards. I’ve always loved those moments and wanted them to last as long as possible. This song was written a little backwards on purpose and it made me think about the general mindset of the Trio. We embrace mistakes and like to go out on a limb and experiment with things. When we do, we try to do it with grace and the utmost respect for the art form.”

Scripting the Flip is out Friday, 4/3 via Organic Records and is available for pre-order/pre-save – HERE.
