Song Premiere: Anya Hinkle, “Coming Home” (feat. Akira Satake)
Singer-songwriter Anya Hinkle and renowned Japanese banjoist Akira Satake have teamed up for a second time, for a new single titled “Coming Home.” The song harkens to childhood and summer scenes—baseball, shooting stars, an “evening train,” and the nostalgic scent of mama’s home cooking.
Satake’s inimitable banjo rolls paces in the background, supporting and holding aloft Hinkle’s poetic lyricism with pride, like a summer flower in a child’s fist.
Hinkle is a past winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest 2019 and has collaborated with Satake before, on her song “Hills of Swannanoa,” which was runner-up in the 2022 International Acoustic Music Awards. Satake is an in-demand sideman and producer, who has worked with Shawn Colvin, Hazel Dickens, and Mamadou Diabate, among others.
