In Review: Guest DJ Hour with Dave Simonett

Dave Simonett of Trampled By Turtles did not let the pandemic keep him from recording. In fact, he turned around a pretty hopeless situation on his new EP, Orion (out on Friday, April 30), which contains songs originally intended for TBT. Once Covid shut down the bands’ studio time, Dave thought he’d get a bunch of friends together and record nearby his home – more low-key, but still in a studio. Once those plans were derailed due to the shutdown, Dave holed up in his house and recorded himself on a multi-track cassette recorder. The result is a beautiful little EP and a whole bunch of lessons on self-reliance that Dave didn’t know he needed.
He shares a song from the new release as well as one from Trampled By Turtles in his guest DJ set. He clearly shows his midwest roots with other picks from Greg Brown and The Pines, and his selections of Erin Rae, Blaze Foley, Dirk Powell and The Be Good Tanyas prove that he’s got some serious folk-cred. Dave also comments on loving life at home and not really knowing how he’ll transition back to life on the road. He’ll figure it out soon enough, though. You can catch him on the road for a wild amount of tour dates with Trampled By Turtles.
