Chris Pierce – “Madonna of the San Joaquin”

“Madonna of the San Joaquin” is a direct challenge to the hypocrisy of those who invoke scripture and morality while turning their backs on the vulnerable and even participating in their mistreatment.” – Chris Pierce

In the song, from Pierce’s upcoming record, ‘Songs for the Heavy Hearted’ [Missing Piece Records, 8/21], he sings: “She’s the gal that’s been scrubbing your floor, picking your fruit ‘til her arms are sore but now you kick her out your big front door. You sent the sheriffs and the marshals and the deputies so she’s running through the night just trying to stay free.”

Our hearts and minds are in Biddeford, ME and Colombia with the family and friends of Joan Durán Guerrero.

Bonnie Paine feat. Appalachia Rising – “Lighthouse”

This song is haunted – as many of the best songs are.

Rising Appalachia’s Leah Song and Chloe Smith join Elephant Revival’s Bonnie Paine in a driving and cresting siren song from her first solo album ‘Unseen.’ [Available now, Ravensong Records.]

I don’t know what it’s called when three magical voices don’t so much sing together as haunt complimentarily. Listen to the tune and educate me?

“There’s trouble – but it isn’t too late. We can dance with fate. There’s a will, there’s a way when we’re one and the same.”

Trampled by Turtles & Jeff Tweedy – “Love is Everywhere (Beware)”

This new arrangement/recording of Jeff Tweedy’s song from the 2019 Wilco album “Ode to Joy” does make me want to hear an entire “Trampled by Turtles Strum Wilco” record. Who do we have to call?

“We were honored to work with Jeff Tweedy, a songwriter who holds all of our admiration, on a version of his great song, “Love is Everywhere”. We’ve always enjoyed reimagining songs we love, but to be able to do it with the guy who wrote it was a real pleasure. We’re thankful that Jeff is such an open-minded, creative force. We could all use a little more of that, I think.” – Dave Simonett (Trampled by Turtles

We have new music from current Fresh Cuts faves Allison Russell, Keb’ Mo,’ and Margo Price.

Malawian ethnomusicologist, musician, researcher, and cultural broadcaster Waliko Makhala’s “Moto Wayaka” is a standout single from the upcoming ‘Sounds of Malawi Vol.1’ which is coming out *next* Friday from Hen House Studios.

Enjoy! – SLD
