• FreshGrass To Debut New Spring Festival in Bentonville, Arkansas

    FreshGrass, the highly anticipated festival of cutting-edge bluegrass and roots music, is making its Arkansas debut at the Momentary in Bentonville on April 24–25. The initial line-up includes Alison Krauss, Old Crow Medicine Show, Steep Canyon Rangers, Sarah Jarosz, Alison Brown, Ruthie Foster, Flor de Toloache, Leyla McCalla, Smokey and the Mirror, with more artists to be announced soon.

    Today, the FreshGrass Foundation announces the addition of Folk Alley to its community of roots music organizations. The Foundation, which began in 2017 aims to preserve, support, and create innovative grassroots music, and actualizes this mission by producing the annual FreshGrass Festival, publishing No Depression, and offering a range of financial commissions and awards. By welcoming Folk Alley into this family of independent roots music entities, the FreshGrass Foundation will continue to fulfill its mission through yet another means — digital folk music discovery, streaming, and distribution.

    Many of the highlights of the 61st Grammy Awards came courtesy of musicians familiar to Folk Alley fans – including Kacey Musgraves (who picked up four trophies topped by Album of the Year for Golden Hour) and Brandi Carlile who topped the American Roots categories with three wins for her album By the Way, I Forgive You and her song “The Joke,” which Carlile tore through on the Grammy stage.     The community of Folk Alliance International’s Folk DJs around the world and Folk Alliance International (FAI) are pleased to announce that applications for the second annual Gene Shay Folk DJ Scholarship are now open through September 30, 2018 (apply here.) The search is now underway for this year’s next- generation emerging DJ, someone who brings a youthful enthusiasm, deep knowledge, and respect for the contemporary and traditional folk scene to broadcasting, and to their programming.

  • The Stray Birds Announce New Album ‘Let It Pass’ Due Out In September and Fall Tour Dates

    Releasing September 7th on Yep Roc Records, Let It Pass charts the trio’s tumultuous emotional journey in the years since the release of their 2016 album Magic Fire, a period which saw fiddler/guitarist/banjoist/vocalist Maya de Vitry and fiddler/guitarist/mandolinist/vocalist Oliver Craven end their romantic relationship while choosing to continue their musical one. Along with bassist/banjoist/vocalist Charlie Muench, the pair had to face down an uncertain future and reevaluate what it meant to create art together.

  • k.d. lang to Receive Americana Trailblazer Award

    The Americana Music Association has named k.d. lang as the recipient of the 2018 Americana Trailblazer Award. The honor will be presented to lang at the 17th annual Americana Honors & Awards, which will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at the historic Ryman Auditorium. lang will also headline the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Sunday, September 16 as part of her "Ingénue Redux" Tour, celebrating that landmark album’s 25th anniversary.
